Propriety in worship

         Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
       I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you.
       Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
       Every man who prays or prophesies  with his head covered dishonors his head. And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head - it is just as though her head were shaved.
       If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.
       A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
       For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
       neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
       For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.

                                                                                                                                   1Corinthians 11:1-10

These verses alone speaks for itself. It is not the word of man but the word of God. It is whether we choose to obey his commands. John 14:15: "If you love me, you will obey what I command.
If we say we love God and want to follow his footsteps yet are not able to obey whatever he asks us to do, are we not just speaking in vain? It is very important indeed to remember God's teaching and not the teaching of man. If we say that it's the modern age now and it doesn't matter if we don't wear a veil so long as we go to church and worship God from our hearts, God see our hearts, etc...we're wrong. Wearing a veil is part of our act of obedience and worship towards God.

yah! the conviction to obey is very admirable (: but after reading that i feel compelled to put in my thoughts too.. hope it's okay.

i'm sure we know there are different understandings of these verses by people who i think are no less christian than we are.. this is probably one of many non-fundamental issues where we have some wiggle room, after reading and understanding the word in totality (as opposed to important gospel issues that we have no room for being wrong: such as whether we have to speak in tongues to be a christian, whether we should ignore god's character as a righteous judge but only a loving forgiving father, etc..)

of course having this understanding of the verses isn't necessarily wrong (: but i'd suggest for us to be discerning before we mention our position to others? for example, if i was indeed a christian woman (only god knows..) and i understand that verse as a temporary cultural significance (this interpretation is acknowledged in our niv study text, i seem to agree), and i was presented with this view bluntly, i might be put down and demoralized by being called a fraud for not wearing a veil. maybe some girls who come across your blog who don't come from a bretheren church, for example might feel the same

much more constructive to constantly question, challenge (which is what you've done) and encourage everyone to have a good and constantly-improving understanding of his word, and then encourage everyone to serve/love/obey god the best way we honestly know how (:
